Who was Fibonacci? 
Leonardo Pisano or Leonardo of Pisa, more widely known by the name Fibonacci (short for Filius Bonacci which means "son of Bonacci"), was an Italian mathematician who lived in Pisa between the years 1170 – 1250 AD. He is renowned for his significant contribution to mathematics and science during the middle ages. In "Liber Abaci", a book that he wrote in 1202, Fibonacci introduced to the western world the modern number system that replaced the cumbersome Roman numerals and has ever since been used for all numerical calculations and accountings. He also introduced the Fibonacci numbers that are called in his honor.

What are Fibonacci numbers and why are they important? 
Fibonacci numbers comprise a sequence of numbers in which each member, starting at the third, is the sum of the two numbers that precede it. The first two members are both equal to 1 (In modern computer usage the first two Fibonacci numbers are 0 and 1 respectively). Thus, the first ten numbers in the Fibonacci sequence are 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34 and 55. This pattern, which represents a widespread phenomenon in nature, is also used extensively in various fields of mathematics, economics and modern computation methods.
